Project Budgeting and Cost Management
Course Description
Effective project budgeting and cost management are cornerstones of successful project execution. This course provides participants with the tools, techniques, and knowledge needed to plan, estimate, and control costs throughout the project lifecycle. Special emphasis is placed on integrating project scheduling, resource allocation, and cost control mechanisms to ensure financial efficiency. Designed with practical applications in mind, this program also addresses the critical aspects of field administration, contract management, and on-site coordination, particularly in construction projects. Participants will gain hands-on experience with industry-standard tools and frameworks, enabling them to handle real-world challenges in budgeting and cost management.

By the end of this training course, participants should be able to:

  • Develop comprehensive project budgets linked to activity schedules.
  • Apply cost estimation techniques and integrate them into project planning.
  • Perform resource leveling and allocation to optimize project timelines and costs.
  • Use earned value management (EVM) for monitoring project performance.
  • Address cost overruns through proactive control strategies.
  • Understand the responsibilities of field administrators in managing project documentation and resolving disputes.

Successfully manage contract close-out processes and prepare financial reconciliations

  • Project Managers and Coordinators
  • Construction Field Administrators
  • Contract Managers
  • Site Supervisors and Engineers
  • Professionals involved in cost estimation, resource allocation, or project scheduling

This course employs a mix of theory, case studies, hands-on exercises, and interactive discussions. Participants will work on real-life scenarios and simulations to apply budgeting and cost management principles. Tools like Microsoft Project and Excel may be used to demonstrate practical applications.

Module One: Fundamentals of Project Scheduling and Cost Estimation

  • Importance of scheduling in project budgeting
  • Cost estimation techniques: Analogous, Parametric, and Bottom-Up
  • Linking activity duration to project costs
  • Hands-on: Develop a basic schedule and estimate costs

Module Two: Resource Management and Cost Optimization

  • Resource profiling and allocation strategies
  • Techniques for resource leveling and smoothing
  • Cost implications of schedule compression (e.g., crashing and fast-tracking)
  • Practical Exercise: Perform resource leveling using the provided tools

Module Three: Earned Value Management and Field Administration

  • Understanding CPI, SPI, and variance analysis
  • Field administrator responsibilities in cost control
  • Monitoring and documenting progress on-site
  • Case Study: Manage cost overruns using EVM metrics

Module Four: Contract Close-Out and Advanced Case Study

  • Contract close-out processes and reconciliation
  • Preparing and presenting field reports
  • Simulation: Participants manage a project budget, adapt to changes, and handle disputes
  • Final project presentation and group discussion

BTS attendance certificate will be issued to all attendees completing minimum of 80% of the total course duration.
