How to be a More Effective HAZOP Leader
Course Description
This course will develop the skills of professionals who conduct hazard reviews and manage process safety recommendations. The course will provide the tools required to perform effective and comprehensive safety reviews, and understand the different tools available to make good and cost-effective decisions. The course includes: team selection, pre HAZOP preparations, identifying hazards, conducting an effective hazard review (HAZOP), developing cost-effective and risk-ranked recommendations to remedy the hazards, and preparing a final report on the hazard review.
The Training Course Will Highlight ?

The course will also cover when to use more quantitative methods like LOPA, SIL and FTA. The course will include a hands-on approach that demonstrates HAZOP techniques and provides working examples.

Training Objective

By the end of this course delegates will be able to:

  • Understand when a HAZOP is required
  • Perform a HAZOP in a time effective manner
  • Determine what relevant information is required for meetings
  • Avoid conflict and ensure that no important issues are omitted from meetings
  • Generate well-documented recommendations that are risk-ranked by most important to ensure effective implementation
  • Generate a list of other recommendations that are non-critical to process safety
  • Understand when semi-quantitative and quantitative techniques are useful or when to enlist specialist help
  • Generate a report that is well written, comprehensive and can be revalidated in the future without much difficulty
  • Prepare and maintain an evergreen HAZOP for the process

The course will cover the following topics:

Identifying Hazards Understanding the different techniques for conducting hazard reviews (what if, checklist, FMEA, HAZOP,LOPA, FTA) Understanding how to perform a HAZOP review: concepts and detailed understanding through the use of examples Determining when HAZOP studies should be done through project development and during plant life cycle: baseline, revalidation, process changes, and maintaining evergreen HAZOP Preparing for a HAZOP Selecting the HAZOP team Conducting an effective HAZOP – team management and time management Developing recommendations Risk ranking recommendations Tracking recommendations and preparing a timeline for completion Identifying where more quantitative risk analysis is required using LOPA, Risk Matrix, or FTA Writing the HAZOP report Understanding the role of the HAZOP team leader Understanding the role of the HAZOP team members

Target Audience

This course is designed for professionals involved with safety in process, operations, maintenance and projects and implementing safety recommendations from hazard reviews.
