Hydroisomerization Unit Operation and Troubleshooting
Course Description

This course provides participants with in-depth technical knowledge of C5–C6 hydroisomerization units, focusing on unit operation, process variables, equipment, catalyst behavior, and troubleshooting. Participants will gain a strong understanding of the unit’s role within the refinery scheme, the chemical reactions involved, and practical experience in interpreting Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), optimizing performance, and addressing operational challenges. Emphasis is placed on start-up, shutdown, and troubleshooting techniques, allowing participants to confidently operate and maintain hydroisomerization units.

This course allows detailed coverage of process fundamentals, equipment, catalysts, process variables, and practical troubleshooting for hydroisomerization units, including client-specific operations.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Recognize the significance of the hydroisomerization unit within the overall

refinery process.

2. Describe the C5–C6 isomerization process and the chemical reactions involved.

3. Interpret the Process Flow Diagram (PFD) and identify key equipment and process

streams.

4. Explain the operation and impact of gas and liquid dryers, reactors, and other

auxiliary equipment.

5. Recognize catalyst types, poisons, and deactivation mechanisms.

6. Monitor and control process variables for optimal unit performance.

7. Conduct start-up and shutdown activities following standard operating procedures.

8. Troubleshoot operational problems and implement corrective actions effectively.

9 . Apply knowledge to client-specific unit operations, considering design and operational nuances.
