Tank calibration Proving & Hydrocarbon Measurement Applications
Course Description

Storage Tank Operation, calibration & Hydrocarbon measurements is a course designed to offer the participants an insight of how tank farm storage tanks are constructed, operated, inspected and maintained. This course is designed to provide participants with a complete overview of the oil movement; measure and proving in modern refineries; process plants; oil/gas fields and marine terminals.

This advanced technical course delivers a deep and practical understanding of storage tank calibration, level measurement, and hydrocarbon inventory measurement techniques implemented in modern oil & gas and petroleum storage operations. Participants will gain both the theoretical foundations and hands-on applications of calibration and measurement systems critical for accurate stock-holding, custody transfer, fiscal metering, and regulatory compliance.

Through a combination of structured lectures, real-world case studies, practical exercises, and measurement system troubleshooting scenarios, delegates will exit the course with improved operational competence, measurement confidence, and minimized measurement uncertainty.

Delegates will enhance the knowledge on Storage operations, Design of Storage Tanks, Design Considerations of Tanks and Manifolds, Tanks Heaters and Mixers, Tank Operations, Loading and Unloading Operations, and Handling of Slops.

Why This Course Matters?

Accurate measurement of hydrocarbon inventories and flows underpins financial integrity, contractual accuracy, safety, and regulatory compliance in petroleum operations. Miscalibration or improper proving practices can lead to significant financial loss, contractual disputes, safety exposure, and audit non-conformance.

The course equips participants to:

  • Understand measurement uncertainty drivers and how to control them
  • Execute and validate tank calibration tables and dip charts
  • Select, configure, and maintain level and volume instrumentation
  • Apply industry standards and best practices for hydrocarbon quantity determination

Upon the successful completion of this seminar, participants will have a good knowledge of:

  • Grasp the relevant types of storage tanks and their associated terminology & Assess storage tank performance
  • Learn about tank safety issues, tank standards and codes
  • Study failure mechanisms including corrosion
  • Explain measurement fundamentals: Understand the physics of fluid level, volume, mass, density, and how these relate to hydrocarbon inventory.
  • Develop and validate tank calibration tables: Learn structured procedures for generating calibration charts using classical methods and automated systems.
  • Perform level instrument proving & validation: Apply methods to verify radar, differential pressure, float, and other level transducers used in custody transfer.
  • Integrate temperature & density correction: Use API and international correction factors for volume and mass calculations under varying operating conditions.
  • Apply tank gauging best practices: Conduct manual and automated tank gauging with repeatable accuracy.
  • Assess measurement uncertainty: Identify sources of error and techniques to quantify and reduce uncertainty.
  • Comply with industry standards: Apply APIMPMS and ISO 7507 guidelines for hydrocarbon measurement and calibration.
  • Implement data reconciliation: Integrate measurement data into reconciliation systems to support production reporting and fiscal allocation.

Storage Tank Operation, calibration & Hydrocarbon measurements training course is designed for:

  • Technical personnel involved in working of safe handling, storage and transportation of hazardous substance.
  • Supervisors and Engineers, both operations and designing systems for safe handling, storage and transportation of hazardous substances.
  • Tank farm operations, custody transfer, and inventory control
  • Measurement & calibration engineers
  • Instrumentation & control technicians
  • Well testing & production measurement specialists
  • Quality assurance and compliance personnel

Storage Tank Operation, calibration & Hydrocarbon measurements training course will be conducted in a facilitative style with a combination of lecture and practical exercises in the use of techniques, case studies and a high level of lively debate and sharing of ideas. Delegates will be encouraged to introduce problems of their own for discussion and analysis. Copies of all lecture materials, case studies and workbooks will be provided.
