Microbial Analysis of Wastewater
Course Description

This training covers aspects of wastewater analysis at a microbial level.

All waters that occur in nature contain impurities, the types of constituents and their concentrations vary greatly depending on natural phenomena and human activities.

The composition of water can be expressed in the concentration of individual compounds or it can be expressed in the concentration of a group of related compounds, such as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), these are called lump parameters

Wastewater may contain high levels of ammonia and phosphorus. Releasing these nutrients to a receiving stream may lead to eutrophication.

eutrophication - a process by which pollution from such sources as sewage effluent or leachate from fertilized fields causes a lake, pond, or fen to become over rich in organic and mineral nutrients, so that algae and cyanobacteria grow rapidly and deplete the oxygen supply.
