Course Description
This training course is designed to cover HAZMAT regulations and procedures in the context of the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) has established a series of regulations governing the transportation of hazardous material (Hazmat 49 CFR 171-173, Hazmat HM-181, Hazmat HM-126, Hazmat HM-232 etc.), with a specific focus on petroleum products (e.g., such as LPG, LNG, CNG, Propane, Hydrogen, Gasoline, Diesel and MTBE). Throughout this interactive training, participants will get familiar with the loading, unloading, storing, and transportation of petroleum products in a safe and systematic approach and achieve compliance with the relevant regulations and standards. The training will exclusively address road and rail transportation methods, excluding air and sea transport.

This course is structured into five comprehensive modules, each focusing on key aspects of HAZMAT Applications for Petroleum Products (Road & Rail). It includes:

  • 30% on practical groups and individual assignments.
  • Comprehensive course handout, resources and reference materials.
  • Written pre-training and post-training assessments.
  • Continuous verbal and practical assessments throughout the training program.

Module One: Introduction to HAZMAT and Petroleum Products

· Definition of HAZMAT and the significance of petroleum products.

· Overview of common petroleum products: Crude oil, gasoline, diesel, etc.

· Classification of hazardous materials (Class 3 - Flammable Liquids, etc.).

· Overview of transportation modes and their challenges.

· Regulatory bodies and frameworks (e.g., DOT, EPA, OSHA).

· Responsibilities of shippers, carriers, and receivers.

 

Module Two: Regulations and Compliance for HAZMAT Transportation

· Overview of the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act (HMTA).

· Detailed review of DOT regulations: Title 49 CFR.

· UN/DOT classification system and labeling requirements.

· Packaging, Labelling and Containerization Standards for petroleum products.

· Documentation, Recordkeeping and Reporting obligations for HAZMAT activities.

 

Module Three: Safe Handling and Storage of Petroleum Products

· Best practices for the safe handling of hazardous materials.

· Procedures for loading and unloading petroleum products.

· Containment and spill prevention measures.

· Importance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

· Storage requirements and site safety considerations.

 

Module Four: Emergency Response and Spill Management

· Developing an Emergency Response Plan (ERP) for HAZMAT incidents.

· Roles and responsibilities of responders during a HAZMAT incident.

· Spill containment and recovery techniques for petroleum products.

· Notification and reporting procedures for spills (Coordination with emergency services).

· Case studies of petroleum product incidents and lessons learned.

Module Five: Risk Assessment and Best Practices in Transportation

· Conducting risk assessments for HAZMAT transportation scenarios.

· Assessing routes for safety vulnerabilities (road and rail).

· Implementing best practices in training, communication and drills for emergency situations.

· Emerging Technology in HAZMAT management (tracking, monitoring).

· Future trends in HAZMAT applications and sustainability considerations.

· Continuous improvement in HAZMAT management.

· Training wrap-up and Q&A session.

 BTS Consultant Certificate will be issued to all attendees completing minimum of 75% of the total tuition hours of the workshop.
