Course Description
This 5-day short course is intended for all those involved in drilling and those requiring basic knowledge of well design and engineering. It is a classroom course, given by class presentations, with short problem analysis and solutions, in-class interactions, pre- and post-quiz evaluation of knowledge level of participants. The goal of the course is to provide insights into the planning and execution of a drilling operation, and it will cover well design and engineering calculations involved in planning a well.

Training Objective

The aim of this short course training is to provide knowledge on theoretical and practical aspects of well design and engineering, drilling operations, through lectures, group interactions and solving practical exercises. At the end of this course participants will learn:

    • The principles of well design and engineering
    • The principles of drilling, cementing, casing running
    • The principles of well control and blowout prevention
    • The functions of drilling fluids and cements, and how to design them
    • How to identify different rig types and different components of drilling rigs
    • How downhole pressures affect well design and identify means to control them
    • How to calculate cement volumes and properties
    • The needs for casing design, and how to calculate burst, collapse and tension requirements
    • The principles of logging and MWD/LWD
    • The principles of directional drilling and how to design well trajectories
    • How completions design and production requirements affect well design
    • How to design the drill string and BHA

Target Audience

Drilling engineers, completion engineers, and drilling supervisors involved with drilling operations and well planning, and also geologists, geophysicists, production engineers, reservoir engineers who would like to extend their knowledge into WDE.

    • Optimization of bit hydraulics
    • Wellbore cleaning and cuttings transport issues

3. Casing Design & Casing Running

    • Purpose of casing design, casing / hole diameter selection
    • Burst / Collapse / Tension calculations
    • Casing depth estimation, Mud weight estimation
    • Casing running operations

    • Surface / downhole measurements / problem prevention

    • Logging, Mud Log, Open hole logs
    • Basic components & function of completions

3. Drilling Problems & Advanced Drilling Techniques

    • Types of drilling problems, severity
    • Lost circulation - Stuck pipe - Junk in hole - Fishing
    • Managed Pressure Drilling / Casing Drilling
