Lockout & Tagout: OSHA’s Safe Isolation Of Process Plant Equipment
Course Description
Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) is a critical safety procedure to ensure that dangerous machinery and equipment are properly shut off and unable to restart during maintenance or servicing. Failure to implement LOTO has been a leading cause of workplace injuries and fatalities. Statistics show that nearly 10% of all workplace fatalities occur due to unexpected machinery start-ups or the release of hazardous energy during maintenance or servicing. These incidents result in severe injuries, amputations, or even death, with studies showing that effective LOTO programs can reduce equipment-related injuries by over 55%. Implementing an effective LOTO program ensures that machines are completely de-energized and secured before work begins. This course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to identify energy sources, apply LOTO procedures, and comply with regulations such as OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147. By understanding the risks and adopting best practices, participants will play a critical role in safeguarding lives and maintaining a safe work environment.
The Training Course Will Highlight ?

This course will help to satisfy the requirements for training as detailed in the OSHA regulation for those who are working in areas where Lockout programs are in place, or whose job requires them to actually do the Lockout and isolate the energy sources.

Training Objective

By the end of this training course, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the principles and importance of LOTO in workplace safety.
  • Understand Hazardous Energy (electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, and thermal).
  • Identify potential risks associated with the uncontrolled release of energy during maintenance or servicing tasks.
  • Comply with regulatory standards and industry best practices for LOTO (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147 and other international standards related to lockout/tagout).
  • Identify Energy Isolation Points and create detailed maps or diagrams for safe energy control
  • Implement Safe LOTO Procedures and apply LOTO in Complex Scenarios:
  • Communicate LOTO protocols effectively to team members and stakeholders.
