Oilfield Corrosion Management Fundamentals
Course Description
This course will cover the fundamentals, mechanisms, and the main causes of corrosion in the oil and gas production system. It will also cover the corrosion control and monitoring methods used in the oil and gas production systems. This course will contain examples of these in the oil and gas industry.

By the end of the course, participants will have learned how to identify the corrosion mechanism, estimate and predict the corrosion rate, select material for different corrosion environments, evaluate and select corrosion inhibitors for different corrosion environments, and estimate the erosion rate.  Participants will also learn how to select the corrosion monitoring techniques and elaborate on a corrosion management plan for pipeline.

By the end of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Know about corrosion principles and classification
  • Learn about the corrosion impact in oil and gas production systems
  • Identify the main issues of corrosion
  • Recognize corrosion principles including thermodynamic and kinetic factors in aqueous corrosion systems
  • Learn about corrosion classifications, such as general or uniform corrosion, localized corrosion, mechanical assisted degradation and environmentally induced cracking
  • Learn about CO2 and H2S corrosion, the corrosion mechanism, factors affecting the corrosion rates, condition for the corrosion and prediction
  • Corrosion inhabitation fundamentals, guidelines and selection will also be covered
  • Discuss methods of inhibitor application, quality control and monitoring
  • Understand  material properties, oil and gas fluid resistance and selection
  • Learn typical materials used for down hole, low alloy steel, corrosion resistant alloy (CRA) and guidelines for down hole tubular material selection
  • Learn about CRA, GRE and carbon steel comparison, the costs, advantages and limitations
  • Learn how to calculate the erosion rate, what the velocity limit for avoiding erosion is
  • Learn how to calculate erosion by non-corrosive fluids and corrosion
  • Learn about corrosion - erosion management, erosion - corrosion in absence of solids, erosion - corrosion in a solid containing corrosive medium, erosion flow chart
  • Cover pipeline external corrosion, types of external corrosion present in pipelines, control methods
  • Understand NACE RP 0502-2002 pipeline external corrosion
  • Identify risk based inspection and pipeline integrity management
